Promotion
of Patriotism
Msgr. Cramers Assembly
participated in a ceremony on Saturday, September 19th in DeQuincy,
Louisiana, to honor MIAs and POWs. For weeks in advance of this event some
of our members worked closely with the city officials of DeQuincy in
planning the day's events. Sir Knight Fred Fluitt and Lady Lauretta, who
live in DeQuincy, are members of the planning committee responsible for
coordination and facilitation of all acitivities. They kept the assembly
informed of the calendar of events and the appointment times for
participating. An Army Officer from Fort Polk, Louisiana, was the guest
speaker and an Army Color Guard was in attendance for the ceremony.
Msgr. Cramers Assembly
Fourth Degree Color Guard and the Military Color Guard both performed
during the presentation of the Colors. Several former POWs in attendance
were introduced to the crowd. As each name from the list of MIAs from
Louisiana was read aloud, during the solemn ceremony, a small American
flag was mounted on a ceremonial stand and red, white, blue and black
balloons were released into the air. Msgr. Cramers Assembly received
servral compliments of appreciation for assisting in this event. Following
the ceremony we were treated to lunch given by the local VFW Post.
Thirteen Sir Knights and four Ladies participated in this activity.
On November 7, 1999, One
Priest and twelve Sir Knights rode on our float during the Veteran's Day
Parade in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Four Ladies assisted in decorating our
float and in preparing food for the after-parade lunch get-together. The
float was decorated in red, white and blue with small American flags
spaced about one foot apart along the railing on both sides. A large
American flag and the Louisiana flag were mounted at the front comers of
the float. Along the parade route, we saw men come to attention and salute
the American Flag, and could hear spectators commenting favorably on our
Full Dress Regalia and on the beauty of our float.
On November 28, 1999, we
participated in the DeQuincy Christmas Parade. Our float was decorated
again as previously described above. Ten Sir Knights were dressed in Full
Regalia and rode the float. After the parade we all went to the home of
Sir Knight Fred Fluitt and Lade Lauretta for a Hot Chili lunch which was
enjoyed by everyone. Ten Sir Knights and three Ladies participated in this
event.
On December 5, 1999, Msgr. Cramers
Assembly was cordially invited to participate in the Starks Christmas
Parade for the first time. The float was decorated again as described
above. Eight Sir Knights and Lady Mary Jane were in attendance.
March 13, 1999, our
assembly provided the Honor Guard for the 13th Annual
Rabbit Festival Queen's
Contest. Nine Sir Knights and Three Ladies participated.
On March 20, 1999, we
participated in the Iowa Rabbit Festival Parade. Our float was again
decorated as previously described. Nine Sir Knights and Three Ladies
assisted with the decorations. Throughout the parade spectators
complimented us on our appearance.
On
March 21, 1999, we participated in another of our very Impressive
Patriotic Activities. Nine Sir Knights and Three Ladies traveled the 230
mile round trip to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Alexandria,
Louisiana. The purpose of the trip was to visit with our forgotten
veterans and to let them know that the sacrifices made for our country are
appreciated. Several Sir Knights collected more than 350 books for
distribution to the patients. In addition to the sports and western books,
we took along a supply of candy, cookies and bananas ( a favorite fruit of
the vets ), and 100 one dollar bills for use as bingo prizes. As we
entered the reception area, the veterans greeted us with smiles and
applause in anticipation of the games and goodies. Veterans wishing not to
play bingo visited with some Sir Knights and Ladies, while those playing
the games were assisted by other Ladies and Sir Knights. We were at the
Veterans Hospital from 1:30p.m. to 4:30p.m. and were very touched by the
warm thanks expressed by the veterans and staff.

On April 30 and May 1, 1999,
Msgr. Cramers Assembly furnished the Color Guard and Posted the Colors at
the opening sesseion of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus State
Convention and at the Banquet held in Alexandria. Seven Sir Knights
participated.
Msgr. Cramers Assembly
participated in the High School Senior Patriotic Awards Program, and
twelve High School Seniors were honored by the Fourth Degree. Honorees
received a medallion and a Certificate during their school's honors night
program or graduation. The Awards were presented by members of the
assembly. The Color Guard carried the colors at many activities in which
the assembly furnished an honor guard, whether a church activity or a
banquet. Our assembly has one of the most impressive and professional
looking Color Guards in the Louisiana District and probably in the entire
Bienville Province.
All members were reminded
and encouraged to fly their flags on all patriotic holidays and other
appropriate occasions. Msgr. Cramers Assembly members assists veterans
organizations in the Lake Charles area each year when thousands of
American flags are put on graves for Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
